March 2010

Lent – 19 days down.

I’m not Catholic, but I personally think it’s healthy to give up something that becomes an unnecessary habit or that you are normally dependent on every once in a while. Kind of a ‘cleansing’ as it were + a good practice of restraint. This year the vice of choice is

sugars + sweets

I normally eat pretty healthy, but I don’t know if it’s just being around the house so much, but my sugar/dessert intake was getting ridiculous. I had quit drinking sodas on a dare a few years ago in college, but I had slowly started drinking carbonated drinks again, namely my old friend Dr. Pepper. And usually every year I ducked girl scouts because I’m a sucker for kids selling stuff, but for some reason somewhere deep inside myself I instinctively knew that girl scout season was coming because all I could think of was some caramel delights. I even kept my eye out for little girls in uniform, LOL. Awful!

But as with most things, you really don’t realize how bad you’ve gotten until it’s gone.

My top three cravings to date have been -

Starbizzle’s Upside-down Caramel Macchiato. I don’t even really like coffee as a general rule, but Starbucks basically serves sugar + cream with a dash of coffee.

The Flat’s frozen mojito. OH-EM-GEE they are the best EVER!!!! It’s like a beach party + icy mint sweetness in a glass!

And these…..

Apparently these lovely delectable looking treats are called ‘Carrot Cake Whoopie Pies’

While casually browsing the internet and two days into my sugar-less diet I find this photo + recipe from the ‘Abbey Goes Design Scouting’ blog. I can’t WAIT to try these!!! *drools*

In the meantime however, I’ve been successfully curbing my cravings with these natural + healthy sugar alternatives -

I must say, so far so good! Every time I want something sweet in the house, I just grab an orange (I’ve been making sure we are stocked!) When I go to Starbucks to study or meet someone, I just buy an Odwalla juice instead. I can enjoy the smell of coffee alone. And when I get tired of water or juice, I just grab my favorite tea – Arizona Green Tea with ginseng + honey.

But I hope that somebody out there tries those cookies…..cinnamon, carrots, raisins, honey, brown sugar…..cream-cheese filling…..can’t wait *sigh*

Many people know of Houston, TX,  but I suppose in living here all my life, I take for granted what we do have + offer (to name a few)

We have a beautiful diversity – more than 90 languages are spoken throughout the Houston area
Houston is home to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the largest rodeo in the world + it attracts more than 1.8 million visitors each year.
Houston has among the youngest populations in the nation.
One of the most varied food cuisines – so many great restaurants!

I get really excited when I find local fashion/crafty talent. My pick, a friend of a friend, designer of ‘Dolly pearl’

Sophisticated + simple elegance in design. She’s the designer, seamstress AND model. Love it!
