Running low on cash keeps you much more aware of the price tag. I, for one, have always been a bargain-hunter type, but I never thought much of sales papers or coupon chasing until now. I’m ashamed to say I’ve plunked down some serious cash (nearly 20 bucks) for a pattern I really liked – and never sewn! But since I have found myself frequenting Jo-Anne’s craft stores the past few months (which is a popular grandma-ish age hangout apparently – they pick some HIDEOUS looking fabrics!!!) you can catch some totally awesome sales in those papers if you keep up with the holiday sales. I must thank Christopher Columbus for his discovery, because it turns out regularly priced Simplicity patterns ($16.95 is about ball-park) were only NINETY-NINE CENTS this weekend + Monday!!!! I bought six + my mom bought the limit, 10. We had to wait for old ladies taking their sweet-ass time browsing catalogs and screaming children (aren’t you old enough for school kid?) but it was a small price to pay! Here’s just two of the patterns I bought.

And I got 2 yards of some hawt black textured faux leather for possible bags/clutches/purses in my future :D at 50% off per yard!! We made out like a bandit – saving over $250 with our purchases combined!! So even if I don’t get to half of these patterns, I feel better knowing I got them for peanuts. I’m going to start keeping a coupon book or something – I am a believer!

So tomorrow boys + girls, I will be be volunteering with Habitat for Humanity with my friend/ex-co-worker that was laid off as well. I love getting out there + doing the work. Always meeting great folks on the build-days and acquiring new skills. Last time I volunteered, I found out that I could lay a roof like no one’s business (can you say nail-gun-diva over here!) Might as well do some good with this void of unemployment time. Just hope it doesn’t rain!

aww shucks

Long story short – I got laid off last Monday.

I didn’t quite want to begin with that news, but it’s reality….and it’s okay with me.
Afterall, the small dose of corporate world wasn’t quite doing it for me to be honest. I’m very fortunate that I was able to work for the design firm as long as I did, but boo-hoo that I didn’t survive cut FIVE. Oh well. I’m turning my frown upside-down and working full force into my sewing, upholstery class (that I’m currently in the middle of), and any other project I can get my hands on while I collect my unemployment checks in the meantime. HOLLA!!

Anywho, moving forward and onto to the next thing. Here’s the back story of the upholstery class:

Day ONE (pre lay-off): orientation + usual class introduction. The instructor has a shop/studio in the Houston area that he’s owned + operated over 25 years! He’s been teaching this course for nearly 10 years I believe. He really loves woodworking + upholstery, teaching, and he’s extremely patient (which helps). The class is six consecutive Saturdays, from 9am – 3pm AND everyone is required to get a tetanus shot before the next class day. Eek!
Students ranged from all walks of life, but majority fell into the category of older, retired (or nearly retired) women. All of the students already had a piece to work on except for me, so I bought this sad chair for 40 bucks at the instructor’s shop.

She’s ain’t much of a looker now, but she’s got potential!!

With my chosen project picked out + my extensive class tools list in hand, after the class I was inspired to hit up High Fashion Homes to find potential fabric!

I’ve totally got some major progress pics…but I can’t show you that yet!
